Mining equipment operates in some of the harshest conditions in industrial automation: explosive dust and gas atmospheres, constant vibration, temperature extremes, and heavy ingress exposure from water and particulate. Mining equipment specification is driven by three factors that don't apply to standard industrial automation:
Hazardous area classification. Equipment must carry ATEX, IECEx, or CSA/UL hazardous-location certification matched to the specific gas group and temperature class of the site.
Ingress and contamination resistance. Surface mining and processing equipment is exposed to continuous dust, water spray, and washdown. IP67–IP69K ratings are standard requirements, not upgrades.
Mechanical durability under shock and vibration. Mobile mining equipment — haul trucks, drills, conveyors, shovels — generates continuous vibration and shock loading that standard-duty components are not rated to survive over a multi-year service life.

Explosion-Proof Servo Motors for Hazardous Mining Areas (Kollmorgen AKME)
The Kollmorgen AKME series extends the AKM servo motor platform into ATEX and IECEx-certified configurations, built for Zone 2 (gas) and Zone 22 (dust) locations — areas where ignitable gases or combustible dust are unlikely to occur, or occur only infrequently and briefly. This covers surface-level mining sites such as processing plants, above-ground conveyor transfer points, and coating booths adjacent to a mine site, but AKME is not rated for continuous-exposure areas like Zone 1/21 or Class I Division 1.

For continuous-exposure hazardous areas (underground coal seams, active gas zones, and other Zone 1/21 or Class I Division 1 locations common in underground mining) Kollmorgen's Goldline EB series is the correct specification, not AKME. Goldline EB is UL Listed for Class I, Division 1, Groups C and D. Confirm the exact zone/division and gas group with a site safety engineer before selecting between the two series. Most hazardous-location motor options on the market are limited to induction motors, which restrict positioning accuracy and dynamic response. AKME is one of the few closed-loop servo options certified for Zone 2/22 conveyor, crusher, and material-handling drives at surface mining and processing sites.
Slip rings transfer power, data, and control signals between stationary and rotating structures — used in mining on conveyor drums, rotary drilling heads, crane and shovel rotation systems, and rotary screens.

SR085 is the standard choice for continuous rotary power/data transfer where periodic brush maintenance is acceptable.
