Mining

Mining equipment operates in some of the harshest conditions in industrial automation: explosive dust and gas atmospheres, constant vibration, temperature extremes, and heavy ingress exposure from water and particulate. Component failure in these environments carries direct safety and production-downtime consequences.

Mining equipment specification is driven by three factors that don't apply to standard industrial automation:

  • Hazardous area classification. Equipment must carry ATEX, IECEx, or CSA/UL hazardous-location certification matched to the specific gas group and temperature class of the site.
  • Ingress and contamination resistance. Surface mining and processing equipment is exposed to continuous dust, water spray, and washdown. IP67–IP69K ratings are standard requirements, not upgrades.
  • Mechanical durability under shock and vibration. Mobile mining equipment — haul trucks, drills, conveyors, shovels — generates continuous vibration and shock loading that standard-duty components are not rated to survive over a multi-year service life.

maxon's heavy-duty brushless servo motors are built for directional drilling, measurement-while-drilling (MWD), and logging-while-drilling (LWD) applications shared between the oil and gas and mining exploration sectors.

Explosion-Proof Servo Motors for Hazardous Mining Areas (Kollmorgen AKME)

The Kollmorgen AKME series extends the AKM servo motor platform into ATEX and IECEx-certified configurations, built for Zone 2 (gas) and Zone 22 (dust) locations — areas where ignitable gases or combustible dust are unlikely to occur, or occur only infrequently and briefly. This covers surface-level mining sites such as processing plants, above-ground conveyor transfer points, and coating booths adjacent to a mine site, but AKME is not rated for continuous-exposure areas like Zone 1/21 or Class I Division 1.

Key specifications:

  • ATEX and IECEx certified for Zone 2 (gas) and Zone 22 (dust) hazardous locations
  • IP64 protection — dust-tight enclosure, protected against moisture ingress
  • IEC frame sizes 2–7, continuous torque range 0.37–50.4 Nm
  • Drive voltage compatibility: 48 Vdc, 75 Vdc, 120, 240, or 400 Vac
  • Speeds up to 5,000 rpm
  • Feedback options: resolver, SFD-M, ComCoder, EnDat, Hiperface, BiSS B
  • Matched with Kollmorgen AKD, AKD2G, and Kollmorgen Essentials (KED) servo drives

For continuous-exposure hazardous areas (underground coal seams, active gas zones, and other Zone 1/21 or Class I Division 1 locations common in underground mining) Kollmorgen's Goldline EB series is the correct specification, not AKME. Goldline EB is UL Listed for Class I, Division 1, Groups C and D. Confirm the exact zone/division and gas group with a site safety engineer before selecting between the two series. Most hazardous-location motor options on the market are limited to induction motors, which restrict positioning accuracy and dynamic response. AKME is one of the few closed-loop servo options certified for Zone 2/22 conveyor, crusher, and material-handling drives at surface mining and processing sites.


Slip Rings for Rotating Mining Equipment (Kübler)

Slip rings transfer power, data, and control signals between stationary and rotating structures — used in mining on conveyor drums, rotary drilling heads, crane and shovel rotation systems, and rotary screens.

Key specifications:

  • SR085 (sliding-contact): IP64 protection, -35°C to +80°C operating range, load current up to 25 A at 240 VAC/DC, 800 rpm rated speed, 500 million revolution service life, fieldbus signal transmission (Profibus, CANopen) up to 12 Mbit/s
  • SRI085 (contactless/inductive): IP50 or IP64 depending on configuration, -30°C to +85°C operating range, up to 3 signal channels and 6 load channels, maintenance-free data transmission via non-contact inductive coupling — the better choice where brush wear or contact maintenance is a concern
  • Modular construction on both series allows combining load and signal/data channels to match the application
  • Glass-fiber-reinforced polycarbonate (GRP) housing on SR085; stainless steel construction available on other Kübler series for heavier-duty mining use

SR085 is the standard choice for continuous rotary power/data transfer where periodic brush maintenance is acceptable. SRI085 trades a smaller signal-channel count for zero-maintenance inductive coupling, which suits hard-to-access rotary assemblies like enclosed crusher heads or sealed conveyor drums.


High-Force Linear Actuators for Mining Equipment (Tolomatic RSX)

The Tolomatic RSX series replaces hydraulic cylinders in high-force mining applications — crusher gap adjustment, gate and valve actuation, and heavy material-handling positioning — eliminating hydraulic leak points and fluid maintenance.

Key specifications:

  • Force ratings up to 50,000 lbf (222.4 kN) on the RSX128
  • RSX080: 18,000 lbf (80 kN); RSX096P press model: up to 40,000 lbf (178 kN)
  • Planetary roller screw drive for consistent performance and extended service life

  • IP65 standard, IP67 optional for dust and water ingress protection

RSX actuators are a direct electric replacement for hydraulic cylinders in applications where leak risk, energy efficiency, or precision positioning make hydraulics a liability.


Linear Actuators for Mining Equipment (Creative Motion Control)

Linear actuators handle high-force positioning on mining equipment — roof supports, longwall shearers, haulage systems, drill rig feed mechanisms, and remote-actuated excavation tools — replacing hydraulic cylinders where fluid leaks and maintenance downtime carry real safety and cost consequences.

Key specifications (CPD-1000, largest frame):

  • Max continuous dynamic force: 250,000 lbf (1,112 kN)
  • Frame size: 10 in
  • Max linear speed: 25 in/sec
  • Standard stroke range: 4–230 in (custom lengths available)
  • IP65 washdown/exposure package for dust and moisture-heavy sites
  • Absolute position feedback via magnetostrictive sensors
  • Internal anti-rotation, no external hardware required
  • Zero discernible backlash in inline configurations

CPD actuators are the correct choice for equipment currently running on hydraulic power; CMC's two largest frames exceed the load capacity of any other electric rod actuator on the market, and the motor only draws power while in motion, unlike a hydraulic power unit that runs continuously.
